Life Lessons
"Life's challenges are not supposed to paralyze you, they are supposed to help you discover who you are."
- Bernice Johnson Reagon
Over the past few days, I have been doing a lot of reflection and introspection. I have taken time to examine the areas of my life that I need work in...some areas more than others, of course. Last night, it hit me. I have a few issues in my life that continue to arise. These issues pop up at different times, with different people, and in different circumstances; yet, the issues themselves are very much the same. Then, I had what Oprah calls, "an AHA! moment." The light bulb went on, my heart started beating faster and I knew, without a shadow of a doubt, that these are the lessons I am supposed to be focusing on in this lifetime.
I personally believe that we are all living to learn exactly how to be the best and highest versions of ourselves. One of the ways that we get to be better is by being placed in situations that challenge us to grow. I often use the following analogy with my clients:
Have you ever been in a place in your life where everything is flowing smoothly? You are doing the work. You are keeping up with your journal entries, you are meditating and exercising and drinking lots of water and you are the walking version of the "happy, happy, joy, joy" song (minus the Ren and Stimpy characters, I would hope...) and then...you stop.
Everything is going SO perfectly that you don't see the need to have more clarity in your life. You don't see a reason to meditate or to get in "me-time" or to do anything that is specifically used for you to be better, because, after all...you are in a pretty awesome place right now.
Before you know it, things start to go "downhill" or they start to get increasingly difficult to handle.
You, my friend, just graduated "high school" and entered "college". Or, as Lauryn Hill so eloquently put it, you are leaving a place of mastery and heading back into a place of learning.
THIS IS HOW THE UNIVERSE WORKS!
We get tested. We pass the test. The tests don't stop coming. The tests don't get any easier. The tests continue to push you to push harder, to dig deeper and to come up with something you either never saw before or didn't even know you had.
And this, is how we grow.
Now that we have an idea of what is going on within our lives, the next step is to pinpoint those areas that are asking you to pay them some attention.
For my person, one of those main areas is being aware of the power of my words. As a writer, author, and poet, I have a very beautiful love affair with words. Yet, as in every other relationship, sometimes I take my words for granted and I use them in the wrong way. After having a rough few days based on the words I have decided to use, I woke up this morning with a sore throat.
The Vishuddha or 5th chakra is located in the neck and throat. It is also associated with the thyroid gland and my mother is a survivor of thyroid cancer. Because of it's obvious association with speaking, it is also connected to our mouth and our words. I am constantly reminded that it is important to be conscious of the words that I use and how I use them. Lately, one of my reflections had this same issue. In retrospect, I recognize that he may have only had that issue because I needed to see what it felt like to be on the receiving end in order to work a little harder at making sure that I balance this chakra and I am communicating from a loving, compassionate and peace-full place.
Take some time to see what things are coming up for you. We are just coming out of a very intense Aries full moon and it is a great time to be cool-headed and reflect on what things need to be "tweaked" in order for us to be evolving as "painlessly" as possible.
