The Daily Om: Find your Flow Friday - Inversions

One of the funnest things to learn in yoga are inversions. I never thought I’d be able to do some of the things i’m able to do know. When I first started, the biggest part was getting over fear of being upside down. The first time you try, you’re like whoa! Crazy! It feels completely foreign. And kinda scary!

When I first tried out inversions like, headstand, forearm stand and headstand, I tried without wall support. I only had to crash down a couple times to move to a wall for support and security. This is a great way to build confidence, but the fear of falling kept the wall close by. What helps you move away from the wall is to LEARN HOW TO FALL PROPERLY WITH CONFIDENCE.

If you’ve slammed on your back falling out of headstand (me), learning how to fall correctly will give you so much freedom to eventually move away from a wall.

This is a GREAT video that explains how to fall out of headstand, tripod headstand, and handstand. Practice falling just as much as you practice the inversion itself. It will give you much more confidence to pop up in an inversion anytime, anywhere!

*HINT: I started to practice falling by also placing all the pillows I had in a pile on the floor, so If I spazzed, I’d have a little cushion for the fall until I did it right.

HAVE FUN!!!

The Daily Om: Mantra Mondays

"According to the dictionary, a mantra is "Any sacred word or syllable used as an object of concentration and embodying some aspect of spiritual power.

For myself a mantra is a chant of a word or phrase, often associated with meditation, there are mantras that are repeated or chanted during ceremonies or as a form of prayer. When used in meditation, mantras are meant to focus the mind in order to help the practitioner achieve full self-awareness. Mantras can be repeated out loud, very quietly, or silently. When choosing a mantra, it is advisable to choose words or phrases that carry deep and positive meaning for you

Today is the start of something grand. Don't sweat what happened yesterday.  Become aware of your surroundings, center yourself, and be at one with the universe. Today is a day where human consciousness begins evolving at a faster rate then it has in the past thousands of years. Take this day to think about who you are, why you're here, and what you're doing. Be grateful for the people in your life, and where you are. We are all blessed.

Giving it to you RAW: Why Cook Black Beans?

It feels like a thousand dull daggers are poking at my stomach and lower abdomen as I document this experience, but there’s nothing like the present moment.  [Shaking my head] I was sitting at my desk after eating a late lunch, when suddenly my sacral area became nauseated and I felt mildly lightheaded. My instant reaction was to go for my **glass water bottle. [We tend to have this notion that drinking a swig or two of water will even out any discomfort] In this case, the water was only filling my belly up more on top of the food I had just eaten. I continued working and pondering what was bringing about such physical discomfort.

[PeaxandLove] Tip - Invest in a glass water bottle! – Did you know recycling a glass water bottle is a sustainable and safe way to consume H20 on the go. Glass better protects your water from the phthalates in plastic bottles. Phthalates are used as plasticizers, making plastics more flexible and inert. BBP (phthalates) in plastic can be activated by heat. Plastic bottles left in high temperatures (e.g. in the car on a sunny day) can be harmful. Perhaps the plastic bottles were stored in a hot warehouse before purchase. Where has your plastic water bottle been?

I remember about a month back the lovely Mrs. Johnson (Brooke’s mom) tried her hand at preparing a RAW meal for us. [Since Buudha (Brooke) and I have made so many lifestyle changes many of our friends and family members have been receptive in accommodating our needs and helping themselves to a healthier lifestyle.] Mrs. Johnson whipped up some RAW Black Bean Veggie Patties- sounds delicious right? Well, they were! Made with ground black beans, garlic, peppers, onions, herbs, spices, and love; we were sold on the patties. I can recall enveloping each patty in lettuce and decorating it with tomato sauce, red cabbage, and red onions. After eating the tasty entree, Brooke began complaining about sharp stomach pains. We both felt rather “woozy” and dehydrated. We assumed it was something we'd eaten prior to; maybe the order in which we had eaten our meals that day; or perhaps we were eating too many dehydrated RAW options. Buudha had [diarrhea] profusely for the next 24, yet we overlooked the black beans from the RAW patties; and I took two for lunch the next day. It never gave me any discomfort except a slight dehydration and lethargic feel after consumption. I assumed it was because Buudha and I were not drinking enough water. This is very important, especially when eating dehydrated foods because the water will be taken from your body. [When putting RAW meals in a dehydrator it is absorbing moisture from the food, while leaving all of the enzymes and nutrients intact. Therefore the dehydrated foods are absorbing moisture from you, so it’s important to rehydrate with water frequently throughout the day.]
I talked to Brooke before leaving work and told her of my discomfort. She always sources it back to what was eaten during the day. Today I had a pear and banana for breakfast; a bowl of RAW oatmeal with sliced apples and banana, cinnamon, and maple syrup midday; and two RAW Zucchini Black Bean Cakes for lunch- nothing unusual. We were both in the car analyzing and associated the incident from the RAW Black Bean Veggie Patties with the Zucchini Black Bean Cakes I’d had for lunch. [Those damn RAW Black Beans] Before we made it halfway to DC for dance class I was regurgitating in my mouth. [Gross] I was trying to pump brakes safely and fast enough so I wouldn't vomit on myself or the inside of the vehicle. Stopping swift on East Capitol St., Brooke hit the emergency flashers and Boom- I flung open the driver’s door and puked an array of colors in the street. [Still disturbingly gross] When I brought my head back up for air, Brooke noticed my face was flushed with red hives or some sort of rash. Buudha pulled out her handy dandy Android and begin to Google some quick “on the go” answers. As she read aloud, I stopped the car in the middle of the street to detoxify again. Here’s what we found:

Reaction from the Raw Black Beans
Black Beans and other [larger] legumes, such as Red/White Kidney Beans (highly recommended NOT to eat these RAW- as little as five kidney beans can have a mal effect), Great Northern Beans,  and Lima beans should NEVER be eaten RAW. All RAW beans have natural toxicity levels. This toxic protein is commonly known as Phytohaemagglutinin (PHA), a bean lectin.  [Lectin is a glycoprotein in various plant based foods, particularly in the seeds of the plant. It can be harmful or beneficial in most cases.] PHA is known to be an insecticide for plants to remain unattractive to pest, but it is also poisonous to humans. We are unable to digest this protein, so our digestive tracks spend 4 to 5 hours purging after consumption. Nausea, Diarrhea, and vomiting are some side effects.  The main function of the small intestine is to absorb minerals and nutrients. What happens is PHA deactivates the epithelial cells, which expand the surface are for absorption in the small intestine. This makes digestion of RAW Black Beans fallible.
On the flip side, soaking Black Beans (or any of the beans I listed above) for several hours- usually 4 to 5 - discarding the water, and boiling the beans for at least 10 minutes,  will deactivate the concentration PHA- degrading the toxicity to safer levels for consumption.
Because I’m an herbivore and NEVER intentionally welcome toxins into my body (e.g. processed foods, refined carbohydrates- white sugar, salt, bread, rice, potatoes, etc), my body was able to react and detox quickly from the symptoms. Every human body will react differently (e.g. when we were both uninformed of PHA, Brooke’s system purged from the uncooked Black Bean patties, but mine did not).
Mrs. Johnson was pleased to hear she could use her lovely “cooking” skills to prepare the remainder of the Organic Black Beans on top of the stove- with the heat on (lol). She was sure to season the beans to vegan and wellness perfection. Even after the poor experience, I was consuming cooked black beans the next day- shamelessly. I took revenge on about three bowls of Black Beans [Overdose] that night, or maybe they took revenge on me for the next 24 hours by leaving me with some gas. And on that note folks remember in all things, “Moderation is a key to daily living."
Now here's some food facts from  Buudha...
- Peax
Black Beans, cooked to perfection!

What Nutrients are in Black Beans?
Black beans are a good source of Vitamin B1 (Thiamin), Fiber, Folate, and Magnesium. They are also a carrier of Copper, Manganese, Iron, Phosporus and Protein. Even though beans aren't a vegetable, they contain an array of phytonutrients that aid in many bodily functions.
Black beans are low in calories, low in fat, a great complex carb, and helps to reduce cholesterol levels.
Vegan or vegetarian? To make your black beans a complete protein experience with all the required essential amino acids, practice combining your beans with a healthy grain such as wild rice or black rice, quinoa, leafy greens or peas.

So we now know that black beans are NOT raw friendly, but which legumes CAN you eat RAW?

Raw Friendly Beans and Legumes
The list of raw friendly beans is actually fairly short. Larger beans should be avoided unless cooked so that leaves a few smaller varieties such as:
Adzuki Beans
Mung Beans
Garbanzo Beans (chickpeas)
Lentils (all varieties)
There is a bit of controversy over whether or not Pinto beans are safe for raw consumption so to be on the safe side I would NOT.
I recommend soaking and sprouting raw beans AND beans you intend to cook before consumption to soften them and release any toxins that may be present. If you must cook, don't OVERCOOK.
Have you ever noticed the foamy substance that appears after leaving beans to soak? - That's what gives you gas and upsets your stomach!

As you can see, our health journey isn't perfect but as we continue to learn, we will continue to pass on the info we obtain.

7 Helpful [RAW!] Tips for Healthy Living

So, some of you may be looking around the site like, "Okay, so where am I supposed to BEGIN!?"

We want to put emphasis on the fact that this was NOT an overnight/cold turkey process for us. It's been a long time coming, starting with the elimination of pork and beef (5+ years ago), turkey then chicken, shellfish leading to all seafood, then cheese, and finally eggs (early 2011)..not to mention the endless chemicals and hidden animal additives we are on the lookout for now. Remember, take it one step a time. Give your body (and mind!) time to adjust.

We have narrowed down 7 Helpful Tips to help you achieve your health goals in this New Year. Let's get started....

1. Educate Yourself. Do your Research.
When you learn about the food you are consuming, it's easier to make health conscious decisions.
  • Read nutrition literature. - books, magazines, blogs (like this one! #shamelessplug) or even articles posted to FB, Twitter, and other social networks
  • Read Food Labels! Look up ingredients that are unfamiliar, hard to pronounce, or chemical sounding. You will discover a lot!
    • Common ingredients to avoid: High Fructose Corn Syrup, Maltodextrin, artificial food colors [yellow no.5; red 40 etc.],  sulfites, Aspartame (artificial sugars like Equal and Sweet and Low), MSG, artificial flavors, "refined" ingredients, sodium nitrate and nitrites...
  • Watch Documentaries. A few favorites of ours to get you started include...

^Fat, Sick, and Nearly Dead. This is only the trailer but the full version can be found on Netflicks ^

Food Inc. Only the preview. The full version has been removed due to copyright issues but it can be found on Netflicks!

The World According to Monsanto ^^FULL DOCUMENTARY

There are many more informative food documentaries such as "Forks Over Knives", "Food Matters", "Earthlings", and "Super-Size Me." They can be found on Netflicks as well, with snippets of each on YouTube.

2. Shop Smart
Modify your diet based on the new information you have learned. Now that you know better, DO better. Keep reading those food labels too!
  • Aim to fill [at least] half of your grocery cart from the PRODUCE section. Buy IN SEASON and buy ORGANIC. The more you buy, the more they supply.
  • Avoid processed foods! Processed foods only contain a fraction of the nutrient content of original source and often contain harmful additives. You'll eventually skip over the majority of the grocery store.
  • Buy local! Some grocery stores have local produce but if not, look up your local farmer's markets for guaranteed fresh and in-season fruits and veggies.  By doing this, you cut back on your carbon footprint since this produce doesn't have to be transported long distances. Plus, you help keep small farms in business! Make sure the people doing the work will benefit instead of greedy corporations. #occupyyourfarmersmarkets
  • Buy what you NEED. Don't gather too much produce at once. You don't want it to spoil! Buy what you need for the next few days. Foods like fresh garlic and ginger will last for a bit so no need to purchase every trip!

3. KEEP A FOOD JOURNAL.
Be aware of your food consumption. Remember, your input is your output.
  • Take note of your body and mood changes when they appear (ex. after eating pizza for dinner, I became mucousy and congested. or I got in a argument with my spouse after dinner and ate a candy bar.)
  •  Keep track of every meal, snack, and splurge and be sure to include alcohol and cigarette consumption as well. You will be surprised what you learn about yourself!
  • Make new changes based off the patterns you have observed. For example, if you notice that anytime you eat dairy you have an adverse reaction, remove it for 2 weeks to see if the symptoms cease. If so, keep it up! If not, keep food journaling to reveal other areas that can be improved.

4. More Home-Made Meals. More Water.
Avoid the uncertainty of food preparedness by cooking for yourself and eating at home. Don't forget to stay hydrated!
  • Fight the urge to eat out! Fast food is an absolute NO-NO when it comes to healthy living. I personally like my food made with LOVE and these stealthy, high sugar, high fat, deep fried dishes are lacking that mandatory ingredient. You will save sooo much by turning that "eating-out" money into grocery money.
  • Carry healthy snacks! As a vegan, I snack much more throughout the day since my body isn't spending time breaking down heavy meats and animal proteins. Make sure you always have a ready snack bag with some fresh fruit, dried fruits (w/ no chemical preservatives), raw veggies (carrots, celery, okra), nuts and/or seeds. These are great healthy snacks that leave no regrets unlike candy bars, chips, donuts, and other highly processed snacks. There are many healthy [non-GMO,organic,vegan,gluten-free] snack options on the market now too, especially at Trader Joes and Whole Foods. One of our favorite brands is Goraw. Explore healthy alternatives but still CHECK LABELS.
  • Along with healthy snacks, PACK YOUR LUNCH.  It's easier to stick to healthy eating when you don't have to decide where to eat everyday on your lunch break. Once again, this saves money, time, and gas...and yourself a headache and regrets later. Prepare your lunch the night before for a stress free morning.
  • WATER! WATER! WATER!! We should get 8-10 glasses of water a day. 20% of our water should come from plant based foods. I recommend filtered water over bottled water. With a water filter you can refill 1 glass bottle repeatedly with healthy, clean water rather than that mysterious plastic bottled water that may have added Fluoride and comes from who-knows-where. Water will also help keep you full and stop some of those random snack cravings.
    • Lemon water at the start of your day is an amazing energy enhancer and body alkalizer. It aids digestion, skin complexion, and overall body function. Make it a habit to squeeze half a lemon into a glass of water [at least] twice a day; 1st thing in the morning and at night.

5. Get Moving!
Nutrition is only a part of the program. Exercise is very important if not MORE important.
  • On average, everyone should aim for 10 hours a week of physical activity. 2 or 3 hours should be dedicated to light exercise such as yoga, tai chi, or even walking.
  • Exercise is important for digestive health and releases endorphins that give you more energy!
  • Exercise helps to contribute to optimal blood an energy flow which leads to a clear mind and a happy body. Work out because you deserve it!
  • For those believers, like myself, that believe exercise should be FUN, try a dance class like Zumba, Hip Hop, Break dancing, Jazz,  Hula hooping, Pole fitness or maybe get down on the Nintendo Wii (and other game systems that get you moving!). That's fun fitness!

6. Commit!
This is a Lifestyle. This is not a 30 day diet or a "Get-thin-quick" plan, but an everyday plan. Being healthy is something you should work towards for the rest of your life. It should be something you want to do not something you have to do.
  • If you can, go cold turkey into this healthy lifestyle but if you can't it's okay. Pace Yourself.
  • If you think that after clearing your system of harmful foods for a month or more, you will be able to relapse and enjoy a fine piece of swine, think again...When you begin to clear your system, your body starts to evolve. When you go back to old ways of doing things, your body will show you the TRUE effects of what these substances do by REJECTING IT. Do not fear this, just keep moving forward rather than loathing over the past. (<--This applies to all aspects of life, not just food...keep EVOLVING!!)
  • Get creative! There are so many varieties of fruits, veggies, beans, nuts, seeds, herbs, and healthy grains that the combinations are ENDLESS. Healthy food is only limited by your imagination!

7. Understand Strength In Numbers
I would be telling a lie if I led you to believe that I accomplished this on my own. I attribute most of my health success to the support and dedication of my partner Johnee (Peax). We took our health by the horns over a year ago and are still standing strong together. We have even started a Women's Wellness Group to help other ladies with their transitions.
  • It's easier to follow through when the people around you are participating in the Journey. Share your facts and food with family and friends so that you can encourage and keep each other on track.
  • Stay active together! Find fun and affordable activities for all to participate in and arrange carpools! This extra energy and push towards your goals is more important than you know.
  • Just like vitamins and minerals, we can be deficient in the nutrients of love and support. When we are lacking these things, it shows in our bodies, habits, and emotions.
  • When working together we can accomplish ANYTHING!

So there it is! I hope this helps many of you through your journey and feel free to use this as a reference point when you need some encouragement to keep going! Happy Health and New Beginnings!

[PeaxandLove] Tip for Plant Excess

Don't throw away your leaves (strawberry leaves, beet greens etc), seeds, skins, cores, and rinds from your fruits and vegetables!

These "remaining" parts carry many nutrients and minerals that can be utilized through teas, blending (w/ a high power blender/vitamixer) or simply composted to give the nutrients back to the earth!

If you're feeling extra spunky..try eating these things raw to observe each natural flavor before experimenting.

Research how to utilize your excess plant matter!

[PeaxandLove] Produce Tip

[PeaxandLove] Produce Tip

Break the habit of wasting fresh produce.
Foods spoils quicker in their natural state (unproccessed, without preservatives), so they should be eaten within the first 3-4 days of purchase (or from being picked).
Buy what you need at the moment. (unless you are naturally preserving for later!) Stop hoarding! This may increase grocery trips but will minimize shopping time and money spent on groceries!
