The Truth About Protein

While living a raw plant-based lifestyle, I'm constantly bombarded with the question, "Where to you get your protein?" This interrogation usually lasts a few minutes and is often instigated by someone with "less-than-optimal" health. Scenarios like these go to prove just how little people really know about protein.

So what is Protein exactly?
Proteins are considered the "building blocks" of life and are used for an array of vital bodily functions.

Proteins are constructed of amino acids. When amino acids group together, they form various kinds of proteins. An essential amino acid is an amino acid that cannot be synthesized naturally by the organism (usually referring to humans), and therefore must be supplied in the diet.

There are 22 amino acids but only 8-9 are proved to be essential.
The amino acids regarded as essential for humans are:

  • Phenylalanine
  • Valine
  • Threonine
  • Tryptophan
  • Isoleucine
  • Methionine
  • Leucine
  • Lysine
  • Histidine

Additionally, cysteine (or sulphur-containing amino acids), tyrosine (or aromatic amino acids), and arginine are required by infants and growing children. Essential amino acids are "essential" not because they are more important to life than the others, but because the body does not synthesize them, making it essential to include them in one's diet in order to obtain them.

The good news is that our bodies naturally pull amino acids together throughout the week from everything we consume and naturally create proteins for us. Simply put, we can eat fruits, veggies, nuts and seeds all through out the week without frantically worrying about combining things properly to create complete proteins. Our bodies do the work of organizing the amino acids to create the protein for us.
We are perfect by NATURE. It’s just science, and knowledge is power.

Enough of the fancy-smancy nutrition lingo...
What's the 'beef' with animal protein?
  • Animal protein takes a minimum of 48 hours for your body to assimilate, whereas fruits and vegetables take anywhere from 30 minutes to a couple of hours.
  • In combination with the S.A.D (Standard American Diet) diet, flesh foods are clogging without the proper fiber to push them through.
  • Cooking makes meat even more indigestible. If you must consume it, eat it RAW!
  • Unless organic and grass fed, meat contains synthetic hormones, antibiotics, and other chemical diseases that are harmful to both the animal and humans
  • Animals are our FRIENDS. I feel that we as humans are here to keep the BALANCE between man, animal, and nature but instead we choose to be barbaric and put ourselves at the top of the food chain. 140 BILLION animals are killed a year to stock grocery shelves. We must work to change this!
  • We waste many natural resources on those 140 billion animals. Trees are cleared out for animal operations, water is provided to these animals until slaughter, as well as grains for food. 30% of the ENTIRE land surface of the planet is accounted by livestock production.
  • The owners of meat companies (dairy, processed food companies etc.) have been lying to you for years in the name of capital gain. At this point, they now have more money than the FDA, USDA, and our government. Who do we believe?

Why eat the animal that eats plants for protein and nutrients?
Go straight to the source!

There is Protein in Everything!

ALL VEGETABLES CONTAIN AMINO ACIDS!
The typical vegetarian gets adequate protein as long as caloric intake is adequate and a variety of foods is eaten. Vegetarian diets tend to be lower in protein than non-vegetarian diet, but typically meet or exceed daily protein intake recommendations, which are believed to be beneficial.

Great plant sources of protein include leafy veggies such as spinach and kale, cucumbers, broccoli, parsley, watercress, artichokes, almonds, cashews, quinoa, amaranth, wild rice, sprouts, seaweeds, mushrooms, olives, goji berries, avocados, chia seeds, hemp seeds, flax seeds,  pumpkin seeds, sprouting, as well as maca root. Many of these sources are COMPLETE Proteins.

***Interesting Fact1 lb of Romaine Lettuce has 2x more complete protein than 1 lb of beef.***
It’s hard NOT to get enough protein during the day so long as you are eating REAL - from the earth - food.

I encourage you to do the research yourself. Ignorance is a choice in the age of information!
Let's work to banish the protein deficiency myth!

Love and Wellness,
Brooke

Mommy, Milk, and Child Development

So you heard it hurts, or that is is an inconvenience, but truth is, the pros of breast feeding outweigh the cons BY FAR. Most of what we have come to know about breast feeding is influenced by public opinion or bashed by those who are ignorant to it's benefits.

Lactose and Lactase

Milk sugar is called Lactose.  Lactose is broken down by Lactase which makes this balance essential for the development of the nervous system.

Human breast milk contains more lactose than cow's milk (which is used in formula) but also has an equivalent amount of lactase to break it down. With a good diet, breast milk can exclusively support the baby for 6 months.

Cow's Milk is much lower in lactase which leaves formula fed babies at a disadvantage because their livers do not yet have the capacity to make this enzyme.

50 to 60 million people in the United States are lactose intolerant due to lack of lactase in early developmental stages. More than half of these people are minorities, either African American, Asian American, Native American, and Hispanic origin.

The Mother-Child Connection: Pros & Cons

Prenatally and post birth, the baby's health is largely dependent on the mother's nourishment. Some even consider preconceptional nutrition - or the health of the mother up to a year before she becomes pregnant.

PROS:
  • Breast Feeding is best for both Mommy and the baby.
    • stimulates uterine contractions bringing the uterus back to normal size
    • reduces bleeding
    • the mother can pass protective antibodies to the child
    • the calorie output to the child helps to bring weight back towards it's pre-pregnancy level while the child gets all needed nutrients such as iron, vitamin A, vitamin C, niacin, potassium, and the correct amino acids for growth
  • Breast Milk is convenient. You carry it with you!
  • SAVE MONEY!
  • Studies show that breast fed babies are healthier than bottle babies.
    • fewer allergies
    • leaner
    • lower cholesterol levels
    • these qualities typically stay true into later years and adulthood
  • The invention of milk pumping devices with storage has made breast feeding and option for working mothers
CONS & PRECAUTIONS:
  • The mother must be healthy or any toxins will be passed to the child
  • Stay away from alternatives. Soy formula is NOT better!
  • Mothers MUST remember to eat well so they do not become nutritionally drained while nursing. Water is the main ingredient of breast milk so stay hydrated!

Why no Dairy? Why not formula?

Lifelong consumption of milk is a common mistake in nutrition. By adulthood we should have all kicked the habit - that is if we even started to begin with. If your children develop reoccurring congestive problems such as excessive snot and mucous and/or ear infections, I recommend eliminating all dairy products for a minimum of a month to see if symptom's cease. Keep a food diary for this!

Cow's milk is best avoided because it has a different amino acid balance which is suitable to calves, not humans. Cow milk also contains more fat and allergens.

Formulas - which are derived from cow's milk - are not recommended due to their unnatural, synthetic makeup.

How Long Should I Breast Feed?

Infants shouldn't have their first meal before 6 months.
A healthy mommy can nourish her baby that entire time on breast milk alone. Waiting  6 months gives the baby time to develop their digestive tract and immune system to reduce chances of allergy and mal food reactions. Premature feeding leads to poor digestion, allergies, immune problems, and obesity.

A child's first food should be simple, natural, preferably organic, and pureed. Imagine coming off of a liquid fast - you can't rush right into solids! Make your own baby foods with a blender and bottle in recycled baby food jars or glass jars! These are RAW baby foods!

Foods to puree':
  • pears
  • plums
  • apples
  • sweet potato/squashes
  • ANY vegetables
Breast milk should STILL be a part of the diet at this time. Continue the pureed food and breast milk combo throughout month 7.

From 8 months to a year, babies become more hungry and adventurous with food.
Make sure you teach your child the vast amount of natural fruits and vegetables that inhabit this earth and let them know that mommy likes this food too! They will often want whatever it is you have. Use this outgoing attitude as a gateway to a well-rounded diet. Breast milk should still be a part of the diet at this time.

So when do they stop breast feeding already!?
Wane your baby off of breast milk when they are ready. Begin waning after a year.

-----------------------------------------------------------------
As women, we carry a big responsibility, for the world comes through us. Give the next generation a fair chance by beginning the mother-child bond properly! You are their first teacher, their first source of food, shelter, and nourishment. Together, we can change the world <3

Another Common Addiction: SALT

As promised in The Most Common Addiction: SUGAR, we now have the scoop on Another Common Addiction: SALT. To understand the information to come, we must first understand "What is Salt?" and "How Is Salt Used in the Body?"

Salt or Sodium?
Salt is a combination of sodium (40%) and chloride (60%) aka Sodium Chloride. 5 grams of salt (1 tsp) contains about 2 grams of sodium. Sodium (Organic Salt) is atomic number 11 on the periodic table with it's symbol being Na.

Sodium is an electrolyte (along with potassium and chloride) and is closely tied with the movement of water - as we may notice in the saltiness of ocean water. Remember, we are 70-85% water ourselves! Sodium is the primary positive ion found in the blood, body fluids, and every cell.

Our bodies must maintain a normal sodium - potassium balance which is KEY to life (and key to avoiding High Blood Pressure!) Sodium is concentrated OUTSIDE of your cells while potassium is mainly inside which is needed for normal muscle and nerve cell function. Proteins push sodium out of the cell and potassium into, thus helping the heart, lungs, and nervous system to function optimally. 60% of body sodium is in fluid around cells, 10% inside of cells, and 30% in bones, making sodium 0.15% of our body weight. Sodium is the primary intracellular mineral although it functions extracellularly when working with potassium.

A Brief History of Salt
Salt was in use long before history as we know it...
  • Ancient Khemetic (Egyptian) art records salt making, salt for spiritual offerings, and as valuable for trade.
  • 4700 years ago in China, the Peng-Tzao-Kan-Mu was published on pharmacology. A major portion of the writing was dedicated to over 40 kinds of salt as well as extraction methods that are similar to today.
  • Ancient Greeks traded salt for slaves, giving birth to the term, "not worth his salt."
  • Salt is also the root of the word Salary which originally referred to payment given to soldiers. This value may have led to it's overuse.
  • Salt is rumored to have up to 14,000 uses - uses for way more than food! It can be used as a cleaning agent for blood, rust, copper, yellowed linens and even applied topically for beauty and health purposes such as cleaning teeth and treating poison ivy.
  • The human species lived for centuries on a natural diet which contained less than 1 gram of sodium - Elevated blood pressure was not an epidemic.
  • NOW 6-12 grams a day or more are consumed via processed foods, snacks, and salt added when preparing and consuming food.

Problems with Salt Consumption Today
Organic Salt or Sodium is an essential mineral and is naturally present in fruits, veggies, nuts, and seeds. When natural foods are the only source of sodium, there will contain more potassium which will maintain balance and not lead to hypertension. The sodium in fruits and vegetables is complexed with other organic molecules, causing them to be absorbed slowly. In contrast, table salt is unbuffered and enters quickly through the stomach lining.

Sodium is easily absorbed in the stomach and intestines. Nearly 100% of sodium consumed gets absorbed into the body, into blood, and circulated through the kidneys which reabsorbs or eliminates in order to maintain stable blood sodium levels. The S.A.D diet (Standard American Diet) consumed by most Americans is in excess of sodium and must be eliminated through urine.

Most people can clear excess sodium chloride from their bodies but it makes the kidneys work harder. Over time, the kidneys may weaken from this chronic stress and be unable to clear the salt optimally. This may lead to high blood pressure.
Standard American Diet sources of Salt/Sodium
High salt diets and cultures have led to an epidemic in high blood pressure, especially in the United States. Other problems stem from sodium overconsumption such as PMS, water retention, and toxemia of pregnancy.  It is not uncommon for the average person to consume up to 12 grams of salt a day! We should limit salt to a maximum of 5 grams a day or 2 grams of sodium.

*RANDOM FACT* In China, a traditional method of suicide was drinking water saturated with table salt. One ounce of salt causes the body to hold six pounds of excess fluid. Salt in large quantities can be lethal!

When you eat salty foods the body has to compensate to maintain homeostasis. If you eat salty foods for a long period of time, as with caffeine, heroin and nicotine, the body becomes dependent on salt to maintain balance. Therefore reducing salt intake can create physical withdrawal. This is how Salt becomes addicting!

While almost all foods contain some sodium, no wholesome natural food has a high salt content. Only the Western diet of processed foods has a high salt content. Avoid foods such as these - they are LOADED with sodium!:
BreadsCheesesPicklesCrackersPeanut ButterBaconKetchup
BBQ SauceChipsOlivesBolognaMayonnaiseCorned BeefHot Dogs
Baking SodaSoy SauceTamariSalad DressingMustardSteak Sauce Popcorn
Ready Made Gravy PretzelsCanned GoodsTable Salt/Morton's
***The above mentioned foods are high in both salt AND preservatives.

"But isn't Iodized Salt GOOD for me?"
Let's first look at Iodine itself.
Iodine is a chemical element that is essential for normal thyroid function. The thyroid influences all body functions such as nerve and bone formation, reproduction, speech, mental state, and the function of skin, hair, nails, and teeth.

Commercial, Iodized salt such as Mortons is overused, overprocessed and contains harmful ingredients such as aluminum and other unneeded and unwanted chemicals. These highly processed, refined salts contain no essential minerals.

**RANDOM FACT** In CHEMISTRY, a salt is ANY combination of a positive and negative ion in crystalline form or in solution. Tricky, tricky scientists...

The life from OCEAN WATERS procides the best source of iodine.
  • Kelp is the most common high - iodine sea vegetable, rich in minerals, low in sodium and a good seasoning substitution for salt.
  • Sea Salt is another natural source of iodine. It is less processed - if at all - than standard table salt. It still contains trace minerals such as iron, magnesium, calcium, potassium, manganese, and zinc.
With good soil, (minerals are absorbed from the soil) other iodine sources are onions, mushrooms, lettuce, spinach, green peppers, pinapple, canteloupe, and strawberries.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
There is no real need for added salt/sodium in the diet. Our bodies function best with a low sodium intake. If you MUST use salt, choose a mineral rich option such as:
  • Kelp Powder
  • Pink Himalayan Sea Salt
  • Hawaiian Red or Black Sea Salt
  • Kala Namak or Black Salt
  • any other natural gourmet sea salts

The Most Common Addiction: SUGAR

Sugar has been on the forefront of controversy and for good reason. Back when sugar was first discovered, there was no FDA or USDA - but had there been, it certainly wouldn't have passed as SAFE and definitely not for everyday use.

SUGAR WAS THE FIRST COCAINE. Well, not exactly...but here's some history..

A Quick History of Sugar

  • 10,000 years ago, the people of New Guinea discovered a plant that was sweet when chewed.
  • In 500 BC, the people of India discovered that by pressing the juice from the cane and boiling it, it would form crystals with intensified sweetness.
  • Shortly thereafter, sugar was discovered by Alexander the Great and it's awareness spread throughout Europe as an exotic commodity.
  • During the Muslim Agricultural Revolution, Indian practices were refined and by 700 AD, sugar was cultivated through Western Europe and across the Arab Empire.
  • Sugar was initially expensive and limited to the upper class
  • Sugar eventually traveled via Christopher Columbus and spread through the West Indies and finally to the "New World."
  • European Elites were hooked on this new "white gold" and sugar production became one of the primary motivations for expansion, colonization, and controlling the "New World." (sugar is one helluva drug)
  • By the 19th century, more than 10 million Africans had been forcibly moved from their land to cultivate sugar.
  • The addiction to sugar by Europeans led to a diet that catered to their acquired sweet tooth. Jams, candies, and processed foods came to be in addition to sweetened teas and coffee.

Sugar Today

According to the U.S. National Center for Health Statistics, the average American eats 20-40 teaspoons of sugar a day. That is around 135 pounds annually. This number does not reflect the use of artificial sweeteners.
Sugar is now added to baby food, cereal, coffee, tea, as well as most processed foods which are already nutritionally deficient. Sugar is hidden in most restaurant food and fast food with salt being prominent in the rest. (Post on SALT coming soon!)

Be sure to check the back of your favorite snacks/beverages and bring your attention to the nutrition facts. How many grams of sugar does it have? For every 4 grams of sugar, there is 1 teaspoon of sugar! Don’t forget to check how many servings are in the package and multiply the teaspoons by that number! How much sugar are you REALLY consuming in a day?

Problems from Sugar Consumption

The list of problems that sugar causes and contributes to is quite extensive but I have listed a few common reactions.
  • Tooth decaysugar causes excess bacterial growth in the mouth therefore contributing to the rotting of teeth.
  • Obesityover consumption leads to a strained liver. The liver cannot store unlimited amounts of glucose and will max out and return excess to the blood in the form of fatty acids. These fatty acids get stored in inactive body parts such as the stomach, butt, and thighs.
  • Nutritional Deficiencies
  • Digestive Problems – sugar effects stomach acid production and leaves food that isn’t broken down to its most usable form.
  • Depletes excess minerals and leads to over-acidity in the body
  • Menstrual problems & PMS
  • Yeast Overgrowth sugar feeds candida and destroys good bacteria
  • Sugar Cravings
  • Hyperactivity and trouble concentratingprominent in children in the forms of ADD and ADHD
  • Linked to alcoholism
  • Mood swings, Anxiety, Depression
  • Heart Disease

Reducing sugar and sweeteners is a positive step we can all take, but first we must identify them.
As briefly stated in “Loving the Skin You're In Pt. 2,” CHECK YOUR LABELS.

Common harmful sugar additives include:

Aspartame/Nutrasweet/Equal - Monsanto product that is commonly used as an artificial sweetener. There are over 90 different health symptoms at the root of modern disease, which are associated with aspartame, such as addiction, eye problems, high blood pressure, hives, and weight gain, just to name a few. More about Aspartame..

High Fructose Corn Syrup – linked to hyperactivity, ADHD, tooth decay, depression, and inhibits the absorption of valuable nutrients.

Brown Sugar – simply put, brown sugar is white sugar with added molasses for color. It also contains all of the negative side effects of Sugar and High Fructose Corn Syrup.

This sweet enemy comes in many forms and by many names. Also lookout for these:

·      Cane sugar
Dextrin
Levulose
Polydextrose
·      Carob Powder
Dextrose
Maltitol
Ribose
Corn Starch
Disaccharides
Maltodextrin
Sorghum
Corn Syrup
Fructose
Maltose
Succanat
Crystalline anything
Galactose
Manitol
Sucrose
Dehydrated cane Juice
Glucose
Mono-saccharides
Caramel color

Breaking the Addiction

Combat sweet cravings with Vitamin C!
Consuming naturally occurring sugars, such as those found in fruits will greatly help in your journey away from sugar. Fructose is similar to Vitamin C in its structure so eating citrus fruits and raw red and green peppers will help fight cravings.

Notice Emotional Cravings and get to the ROOT of them!
Often times you aren’t even really hungry but are suffering from emotional side-effects. Notice what is going on around you and inside of you. How are you feeling? Did something trigger your urge? Try to only eat when your body is really hungry. Food is fuel, not an emotional crutch.

In 7 Helpful Tips for Healthy Living, we discussed keeping a food journal to document what you eat, as well as when, in order to find out WHY. Be specific! For example:

"Before my interview, I nervously ate girl scout cookies. I had a pack of thin mints."
or
"My plans got canceled and I was bored at home, so I ate....."

With consistency, you will eventually notice habits in yourself and can make changes in the necessary areas. This works well for smoking and drinking habits too!

CARRY HEALTHY SNACKS EVERYWHERE!
I can't emphasize this enough! The biggest way to combat spontaneous temptations is to make sure there is always a healthy alternative in arms reach. Pack fresh fruit, nuts, seeds, or even dried fruits so long as you check the label for added sugar! Smoothies are also a fun and cooling summer treat to leave the house with. Freeze the fruit first so that you don't have to add ice and dilute the flavor! Pack a salad or simply bring a home-prepared meal or leftovers with you if you don't think snacks alone will do the job. The power is in your hands!

Tell People!
Inform the people around you of your new goal. Share facts. Share food. THERE IS STRENGTH IN NUMBERS. You may minimize those tempting moments if the people in your life are aware of the changes you are trying to make. It will be even easier if you can convince one (or more) of them to join you!

Be Patient with Yourself!
New habits take time, dedication, support, and patience to be fully embodied within yourself. They say it takes 21 consecutive days minimum to form a habit, so start with a '21 day sugar-free challenge!' By the end of those 3 weeks, you won't even have the same desire for it! If you relapse, IT'S OKAY! Every "cheat" is a learning experience. For that one step back, you will spring 2 steps forward! Patience - Steady Feet.

What IS sugar good for?
Learn about the PROPER use of sugar as a fermenting tool and NOT a seasoning in our Fermented Friday installment by Leslie.

Loving the SKIN You're In...Part 3!

Acceptance, Attitude, Self Love
This is Part 3 of Loving the Skin You’re In. Click the links below to catch up!
[Part 1] [Part 2]

YOU ARE BEAUTIFUL JUST THE WAY YOU ARE!!!
Learn to accept YOU! – every curve, every dimple, every shade, every crevice, hump and bump! In order to progress, you must first accept where you are, and who you are. Acceptance leads to confidence and Confidence is Key!
We have a common misconception that Confidence goes hand in hand with self-love. You have to love yourself to be confident right? Yes and no.
Many ladies only achieve that desired level of confidence by adding artificiality and superficiality to the mix via hair weaves, fake nails, make-up, butt shots, breast implants, overpriced clothing and handbags, but is THAT self-love? Do you remember what you look behind the character? Seen your real hair lately? Can you not leave the house without makeup? Are you envious of others? That’s just a little something to think about. Who are you REALLY loving?
Your thoughts create your reality. Sometimes your belief system and how you feel about yourself is more important than anything you can physically do for yourself.
The media of today has led many women (and men) to the edge of self-hate. Whenever you turn on your TV or open a magazine, you are overwhelmed with pictures of skinny, photo-shopped, and airbrushed models that give a false sense of beauty. Most people immediately judge themselves in comparison to an idea of beauty that is not their own. We ALL could look flawless under a centimeter of paint and some graphic editing.  Real recognizes Real and I can’t identify myself with any of that media hype. It’s an illusion!
Now on to a more sensitive subject..
Black Women and Self Hate
I am a woman of color, and proud to be, but have not always been. I was very confused coming up about myself and the world.  I’d consider myself to be on the caramel/light brown end of the spectrum with the potential to get very tanned in the Summer time. I love that now, but I used to cry because I was darker than the rest of my family and would liberally rub cocoa butter on my body hoping it would lighten me. I remember thinking a relaxer was the standard, while bragging on my long, straight hair. I didn’t know what it meant to be “natural” or that I really had kinky hair without the creamy crack chemicals.
I recall my mother saying things like “Bring home a mixed boy so I can have pretty haired grand babies.” She has more Native American in her with wavy hair, unlike my kinks. I used to consider that to be funny but now I can see the sickness in us all. We are all carrying the scars from a time when we were stripped of our culture and self-knowledge and forced to love something we weren’t.
I remember desiring acceptance from those around me. When I was in Kindergarten I used to tell all the Caucasian kids that my sister was white (she’s not, she’s high yellow with green eyes) as if it would gain me some sort of acceptance.
To make matters even worse, the black people HATED me all through grade school. I was told I had a “white” name or that I spoke too “white.” Whatever the hell that means… I’ve heard all the stereotypical remarks from my fellow people such as, “You think you’re all that because you’re light-skinned” or “because you have Indian in your family.” Darker complexioned women always picked fights with me, put gum in my hair, grouped together just to jump me or exclude me. I couldn’t see at the time that they were hurt too and just as confused. Even the young boys (highly influenced by society and media) promoted the separation and hate of their sisters by saying “I don’t like dark skinned girls” or “she’s pretty....for a dark skinned girl.” How cruel! We are ALL beautiful. Who taught you to hate yourself?
It’s like a new (or not so new) form of mental slavery (google: Willie Lynch). WE ALL HATE OURSELVES. Instead of seeing that we are the same and should unite, you can only see the differences. What a diseased mind state!
Well, those days are long past and I now accept ME. I accept my culture, my heritage, where I came from, how I got here, my family, the trials, tribulations and the things I cannot change. I know that BLACK IS BEAUTIFUL but I also know that my spirit shines brighter than my color. I understand that it took a heaven of a journey and many diverse people to make me who I am today and I ACCEPT THAT! I feel one of my purposes in life is to help women get to know and love themselves again. As Harriet Tubman said, “I freed thousands of slaves, and could have freed thousands more, if they had known they were slaves.” Do you still have a slave mentality?

On a final note, I wanted to say to all the women reading, that we have a responsibility to ourselves and this world. The future passes through us so take care of yourself and take care of each other. If we heal the women, we heal the world. We give our children a fair chance and can influence generations to come. Don't take your womanhood for granted. Love each other. Share with each other. Support each other.
________________________________________________________________________
So, I have been long anticipating the Dark Girls documentary because it delves much deeper into the mental disease of self-hate and the separation amongst our race. The trailer was very touching (I cried lol). Here it is..

*exhale*
Releasing the Negative
I have come up with a few suggestions on releasing negativity from your life. This includes thoughts, energy, and Toxic People.
1. Consider yoga and meditation. Both practices typically improve attitude, mental clarity, energy and confidence. Sometimes we have to retreat inside of ourselves to find ourselves.
2. Gather with some friends in a location with a fire and let it all out! Write out what you wish to release on a piece of paper preferably during the Full Moon. When you’re done, fold it up and wrap it in a black piece of fabric and tie it shut with some kind of natural cording. When everyone has done the same, join around the fire and take turns throwing your burdens into the flames and watching them dissipate.  Release!

3.  Eliminate toxic people. What do you mean by Toxic People? Toxic people would be those that negatively affect you either directly or indirectly. These people can include anyone from pessimists, to parents, to significant others. Getting rid of toxic people is often the hardest since sometimes you can’t even identify them.

Types of toxic people:
Sexual partners – You may eat right, exercise, meditate and volunteer on the weekends but if you were to have unprotected sex with someone who smokes, eats recklessly, and lives an unhealthy lifestyle, you have officially contaminated your system as well. This would be a direct transfer. Women especially should be on the lookout for these kinds of energy transfers because our wombs remember and absorb EVERYTHING. Contraceptives do not block energy transfers. You take a piece of each spirit that enters you so be careful where you lay! This brings a whole new depth to the meaning of "Sexually Transmitted Diseases." Love yourself!
Pessimists – These people can’t look at the bright side. Their glass is always half empty and never half full. They complain a lot and have a lot of reoccurring negative events in their life. Misery loves company apparently because they want to drag you into their funky drama too! Avoid these people! This may be hard if the pessimist comes in the form of a parent or relative so learn to distance yourself and FILTER. Once you can acknowledge who’s who, it’s easier to act accordingly on your part. Kill it with kindness and keep it moving!
Frienemies/Relationships – These are normally indirect transfers. These are people that appear to have your best interest at heart but are secretly resenting you and sending little hateful energies your way. These people are very hard to identify so pay close attention to patterns. Does your intuition tell you anything when these people are around? Spend some time away and see if you notice any noticeable changes in yourself.
_________________________________________________________
Say It Loud!!!
Positive Affirmations change your vibrations! We all want to hear things that encourage us to feel good about ourselves, but why not tell yourself first! Wake up and gives thanks to be uniquely you! Say it out loud! Really!
-"I am healthy. I am vibrant. I shine as bright as the sun."
-"I love myself. I was made perfectly, just the way I am!"
-"I am safe from negative energies. I am secure."
-"I am exactly where I should be and I have all that I need."
-"I am surrounded with people who love me for me."
- "No one is made like me. I am special. I am unique. I am beautiful!"
