Mirror, Mirror on the Wall...
"Because you’re a creation of God, you reflect the Divine qualities of creativity, wisdom, and love."
~ Doreen Virtue
How often do you look in the mirror? When you look in the mirror, what do you see? Do you see happiness...joy...pain...experience looking back? Or do you just see your physical reflection?
A major tool that I use and I recommend to clients for introspection is mirror work.
I remember once hearing that, as a child, Sidney Poitier lived in a rural community. The only reflection he had was water (lakes, etc.) Upon relocating to "the big city", he was astonished the first time he saw himself in a mirror.
"What is this device that allows me to see ME?!" I imagine he might have asked incredulously.
A mirror provides us with a physical instrument that enables us to be an observer...of ourselves.
In essence, a mirror is merely a representation of the Divine's ability to see and experience us from many different perspectives or angles.
In my line of healing, I find that working with mirrors is essential to knowing our true self.
As one of my clients pointed out today, during mirror talks, we are forced to be accountable to ourselves, the same way we are when looking into the eyes of another...which brings me to my next point...
Reflections
Mirrors are not the only way for us to "see" ourselves. Reflections can be found in the individuals we have in our lives at any given time. Our parents, our children, our siblings, our friends and our mates (to name a few) have a major responsibility of showing us what parts of ourselves need to be worked on.
With patience and a healthy perception, we will be able to see the lessons and blessings that are being offered to us by our reflections, whether they are presented to us by a piece of glass or a person we love.
Mirror Work Exercise
- Set aside 15-30 minutes for this exercise.
- Get a hand mirror.
- Peer into the mirror. You can take time to examine your facial features, as this may help you to not get distracted by them later on.
- Look into your eyes. Breathe deeply. Hold your gaze for a few minutes.
- Begin to talk to yourself. Feel free to say anything that comes to mind.
- Be mind-full of the thoughts that arise. Pay attention to your facial expressions, tone of voice, etc. Also, be aware of any emotions that are surfacing.
- Talk as long as you like.
- Close off the session with an affirmation or positive word sound. I generally say something like, "I enjoy communicating with myself. It brings me closer to the source and it helps me talk to others effectively and efficiently."
- Do this exercise at least once a week.
